Susie Lu: Drawn to Design

A poster has a job. It has to stop you, tell you something, and send you on your way. Most designers solve that problem with type and layout. Susie Lu solves it with a drawing.

Her work sits where illustration and graphic design meet. A city rises in soft pastel towers while a delivery rider crosses the foreground. A figure in silhouette holds a paintbrush, and a garden grows out of her head. A coastline unfolds into lavender, roses, and a forest of patterned pines. Each piece carries a message. Each one also asks you to stay a little longer than the message needs.

Look closely at the surfaces. Lu builds her images in layers of texture, the grain of a pencil, the speckle of a dry brush, the soft print of a stamp. Her color is bright but never loud. Flat shapes sit beside hand-worked detail, and the eye moves between them. The effect is warm and a little playful. It feels made by hand, even when it was made for a client.

That is the question her work raises. When does a commercial image stop being only a tool? Lu doesn’t answer it for you. She just keeps drawing past the point where the job was done.

About the Artist

Susie Lu earned a Bachelor’s degree in Animation from Xi’an Polytechnic University in 2015. In 2020 she came to the United States to study Illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design, completing her Master of Fine Arts in 2023.
