Thomas Wheeler:
Night Interventions

“I often think that the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day.” — Vincent van Gogh

After dark, the landscape quiets. The details that crowd the eye by day fall away, and what’s left is shape, texture, and silence. Thomas Wheeler’s photographs begin there.

Each image is a nighttime long exposure, made in the field with handheld light sources: acrylic rods, Lucite sheets, homemade plastic cubes, hula hoops, and anything else that glows. Wheeler calls the western wilderness “the largest free studio in the world.” Its backdrops are vast and starry, and its lighting, from ambient glow to moonlight, comes ready-made.

Wheeler is quick to say he is not a landscape photographer. Landscape photography traditionally celebrates the beauty, solace, and majesty of nature, treating any human presence as an intrusion. Wheeler’s work embraces the intrusion. His light reshapes rocks, arches, and shorelines, often drastically altering the scene nature intended.

Yet the work is not about humanity versus nature, or even humanity in nature. It is about humanity as nature. Wheeler’s own body is present in nearly every image, moving through the frame as he paints with light, yet it never appears. Over the long exposure, he blends entirely into the scenery. Even the portraits in the series suggest a spiritual and physical merging of person and place.

Beneath the wonder lies a serious question. Wheeler examines our loss of connection with the natural world. Nature holds great power over us, but we are not always at its mercy. We shape the land to our own desires, and how we choose to do that reveals what our relationship to the natural world really is.

In Night Interventions, that shaping is temporary and leaves no trace. By morning, the land returns to itself. What remains is the photograph, and an invitation to look again.
